Born in Pontypridd, South Wales, in the United Kingdom.
The fourth child of five - with three elder sisters, and a brother.
Attended Pontsionorton Primary; then Cilfynydd Junior School.
Went to Pontypridd Boys' Grammar School, which became Coedylan Comprehensive when he was in the Sixth Form.
Went on to St Paul's College, affiliated to Bristol University.
Went on to Nottingham University for a teaching degree.
Then on to Loughborough University for a Master's.
